Happy were those who lived inside the eye Volcanoes, and mountain torch, A fearful hope was all that the world contained It lit a fire to forests, but hour by hour They were falling and fading, and the crackling trunks They died out with a bang and everything was black. Morning came and went, and came and brought no day, And men forgot their passions in to terror Of this desolation, and all hearts Were frozen in a selfish prayer for light And they all lived next to the bonfire, and thrones, The palaces of crowned kings, the huts, The homes of all living things, Were burned in the stoves, the cities were consumed, And men were gathered round their blazing homes To look for new faces at each other. The bright sun was extinguished, and the stars Fading roamed the eternal space, No lightning, no roads, and the icy earth Swung blind and darkening into a moonless sky.
